SAP Programming Language -
ABAP stands for -
Allgemeiner Berichtsaufbereitungsprozessor (in German)
Advanced Business Application Programming (in English)
- is a generic report preparation processor,
a high level programming language (fourth generation) used to program SAP's Web Application Server (WAS). ABAP is utilized for customization and modification of SAP applications.
***ABAP/4 was developed by SAP for the interactive development of application programs and is a 4th Generation Language (with some OO - Object-Oriented language features)
***Main uses for ABAP programs include -
- creation of new reports
- development of new user dialog programs (transactions)
- customisation of R/3 to meet individual client needs
***Object-oriented concepts of ABAP Objects are the same as those of other modern object-oriented languages like C++ or Java.
Major differences in comparison to other object-oriented languages are in the development environment. You can use the ABAP Workbench's entire range of functions with ABAP Objects.
ABAP Objects is not a new language, but has been designed as a systematic extension of ABAP. All of the extensions, including the old procedural parts, are upwardly compatible.
***ABAP/4 is an event-driven language. This means that the general flow of an ABAP/4 program is controlled by external events which are triggered only by the method of output generation. Parts of a program form processing blocks, which are assigned to a certain event. The system always starts a processing block when the corresponding event occurs. Events used in ABAP/4 are - Initialization, At selection-screen, Start-of-selection, Get
, End-of-selection, Top-of-page, End-of-page, At line-selection, At user-command, At pf , At selection-screen output, Top-of-page during line-selection.
***ABAP/4 programs are interpreted, they are not compiled. ABAP/4 program has a modular structure.
ABAP/4 shares certain similarities with modular, event-oriented programming languages such as Visual Basic or Java. ABAP/4 contains a SQL subset called Open SQL, that allows you to read and change database tables independent of the underlying database system.
